I never went through waitzin developmental stage of crawling. I was expecting a book that spends a tremendous amount of time on philosophies about learning with examples from his life and others. BUT after rea At first it seemed like Waitzkin was writing this book as a weird way to satisfy his ego. My dad and uncle never pressured any of us sons into wrestling because it was never how they identified themselves or gathered self-worth. Josh is one of the few people that has become an expert at something and maintained the ability to understand and share exactly the process that led him to expertise, then abstract the process to make it applicable to learning almost anything.
He was no Rain Man, and I felt silly for half expecting him to be. People were giving me all this positive feedback, texting and calling me to let them in on my secret to the killer abs. What people are missing is that Josh is not bragging about the level he achieved in chess. He tackled Tai Chi Chuan after leaving the chess world behind.
He does a fairly effective job of communicating this to readers.
The reason the same people keep winning again and again is because they believe they deserve to win and be part of that elite group. There is the careful balance of pushing yourself relentlessly, but not so hard that you melt down. He was a very impressive child who continues to impress with The Art of Learning. Initially one or two critical themes will be considered at once, but over time the intuition learns to integrate more and more principles into a sense of flow.
