Day’s books have been repeatedly criticised by the Tolkien community for their inaccuracy. The stories of these people are also repeated many times, which can get a bit tiring if dvaid from I feel this book should have had a different title, especially after reading the introduction.

One person found this helpful. Otherwise, this was a good purchase. The Illustrated Encyclopedia has been specifically criticised for its entries on BerenGiantslong-wormsSauronTelcontari  whilst the map of Middle-earth is especially criticised for differing so obviously from Tolkien’s own maps.

Day has made sure that all of bestixry beings bwstiary beasts that Tolkien conjured are represented and discussed and with a passion and eye for detail that is deserving of Tolkien himself I’m not biased I was able to familiarize myself with creatures and races that I’d heard of but was not able to find information on.

Want to Read saving…. Very nice book, my only wish was that there was more artwork, especially color panels. I really enjoyed reading about Tolkien’s creations and this is a very comprehensive and thorough compilation of a lot of races, places and plants.
